O'Neil was in high school when she took part in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She was able to make it into the top 100 rounds following the judges' praise for her singing ability. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges. However, she was a victim of significant loss during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed into the bottom three and second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. The judges were shocked by the results and encouraged the audience to support those with great singing talent, like Melissa. O'Neil was never in the third place again following an impressive string of performances. Following two stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, the day that O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie made it to the final two contestants, the judge Werner said that headlines in the morning papers would read O'Neil defeated Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest champion in the show's record . O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
